Purpose of the research
The main purpose of this research is to discuss and analyze the loanwords of Bengali language from the linguistic point of view. Since some detached works have already been done on this topic, but those are few in number and sometimes are with inadequate linguistic research.
Furthermore, the previous works did not cover the entire origins of languages which lent Bengali their words. That is why the current research aims to an adequate linguistic analysis on this very topic.
Research methodology
This research has been done in three steps. These are –
1. Data collection
2. Data analysis
3. Presenting results
Bengali is a language of Aryan branch of Endo-European language family. The Aryan language turned into Old Indian Aryan, Prakrit, Magadhi prakrit, Magadhi apabhrangsha, Old Bengali, Middle period Bengali and Modern Bengali consecutively.
The age of this language is more than thousand years. Within this time, the vocabulary of Bengali language has been enriched day by day in many ways and in various processes. We know that from the historical point of view, the vocabulary of any language gets enriched in two ways; one is by its native words and the other is by its loan or borrowed words.
The condition implies in the case of Bengali language as well. In the course of time, a lot of words entered in Bengali from foreign languages which we call loan or borrowed words. Loan words refer to the words which entered directly or in a slightly changed condition in Bengali from other languages rather than any kind of evolution.
In ancient India, lots of sub-continental as well as foreign words entered into Bengali. We got words from Persian, Turkey, Arabic, English, French, Dutch, German, Portuguese, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Malayalam, Tamil, Telegu, Sindhi, Chinese and Japanese languages.
But in the case of increasing Bengali vocabulary there are mainly three languages which play the most important role; these are Persian, Arabic and English. Remaining loan words of other languages entered mainly through these three languages.
