In the field of Linguistics, discussion of loan words or borrowed words of any language is an important topic. Linguists and scholars discussed this topic in previous times. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee discussed on it in his book “Bhasha Prakash Bangala Bakaran.
He mentioned the foreign words of Bengali language in the section “Vocabulary of Bengali language. He said Persian words hold the first place among the other foreign words came into Bengali. According to him, there are about 2500 Persian words exist in Bengali.
He also said, there are lots of Arabic and some Turkish words exist in those Persian words. Since those words came through Persian in Bengali, we should consider those as Persian. According to Suniti Kumar Chatterjee, after Persian, Portuguese words entered into Bengali.
He said, there are about 100 Portuguese words in Bengali. Beside these, there are some Dutch words as well. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee mentioned about the English loan words also. He said there are a lot of English words included and being included in Bengali.
The words came from Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia to English language and then they entered in Bengali as the English loan words. He also said, there are some provincial words of India also in Bengali. These are, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil and Tibetan.
Suniti Kumar Chatterjee discussed about the loan words of Bengali language in his renowned book “Origin and Development of the Bengali language’ as well.
Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah mentioned about foreign words entered in Bengali language. in his book ‘Bangala Bhushar Itibritto.
In chapter six he said about it as “Foreign influence. He also said, there are a lot of English words exist in Bengali and more words are being included. Humayun Azad mentioned Bengali loan words in the book ‘Tulonamulok o oitihashik bhashabiggan’ while he was discussing ‘Borrowing’.
In his discussion he said about word borrowing and Bengali loan words, especially words from Persian and European origin entered in Bengali. Beside these, Bengali borrowed some affixes from Persian language. On the other side, Shourav Sikder discussed about the borrowed words of Bengali as well in his book “Bhasha bigganer bhumika o Bangla bhasha”.
Beside the aforementioned linguists and scholars, few other linguists also discussed about Bengali loan words in their books and articles. Paresh Chandra Majumder, Sukumar Sen and Rafiqul Islam also discussed on this topic.
Paresh Chandra Majumder explained Bengali loan words in his book “Bangla Bhasha Parikrama’. On the other side, Satya Narayana Das discussed the Dravid words exist in Bengali vocabulary in his Banglae Dravid Shabdo.
The article entitled ‘Banglae procholito Engreji shobdo written by Mansur Musa and Monoara Ilias which was published in the book “Bangalir Bangla bhasha chinta’ described the English words frequently used in Bengali.
Another article entitled “Bangla bhashae Engreji kritorin shobder bebohar’ written by Mithun Banerjee which was published in “Shahitto potrika’ where the author discussed about the English borrowed words in Bengali, their characteristics and the linguistic analysis of those words.
Since this is the study of loan words, we will discuss few terms and their nature and classes which are closely related to the study before we go to the main discussion.
